Billy Johnson (GS) and Chad McCumbee (ST) were fastest in the second 45-minute practice session of the weekend at Circuit of the Americas, ahead of the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge second-to-last round of the season.

Both times set Thursday morning at the 3.427-mile, 20-turn road course are the fastest of the weekend to date in the two pre-qualifying practice sessions.

Johnson’s best time was 2:22.940 in the No. 15 Multimatic Motorsports Ford Shelby GT350R-C he’ll share with Scott Maxwell. It’s a rebuilt chassis following an accident in practice at Virginia International Raceway.

The championship-leading No. 6 Stevenson Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R and No. 14 Doran Racing Nissan 370Z were second and third.

In ST, Chad McCumbee took the No. 5 CJ Wilson Racing Mazda MX-5 to the top time, at 2:29.466 in the car he shares with Stevan McAleer. The pair trail Andrew Carbonell by three points, 212-209, heading into Friday’s race.

The No. 38 Next Level European and No. 56 Murillo Racing Porsche Caymans were second and third.

There were no major incidents in the session. Carbonell, who shares the No. 26 Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5 with the returning Liam Dwyer, got that car back on track Thursday after missing Wednesday’s first session due to ABS issues. Carbonell clocked in ninth in practice.

Qualifying occurs from 1:35 to 2:20 p.m. CT and local time.
