Max Root claimed his second IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge pole in as many starts, with the Wright Motorsports driver set to start this afternoon’s race from the top spot.

Root, filling in for the COVID-19-positive Ryan Hardwick, reeled off a 1:30.536 lap time in his No. 16 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport to edge out GS class points leader Dillon Machavern by 0.528 seconds.

It gave Root his second career pole after taking top qualifying honors at Sebring International Raceway earlier this year, also filling in for Hardwick.

He will share the Porsche with season-long co-driver Jan Heylen in Saturday’s two-hour contest.

Russell Ward qualified the No. 4 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 in third, with Michael McCann (McCann Audi R8 LMS GT4) and Bryce Ward (Winward Mercedes) competing the top-five in GS.

Chris Miller claimed TCR class pole honors in his No. 17 JDC-Miller Audi RS 3 LMS TCR car, meanwhile.

Miller’s 1:32.672 lap time edged out the No. 27 Copeland Motorsports Hyundai Veloster N TCR of Tyler Maxson by 0.017 seconds.

Harry Gottsacker will start third in the No. 33 Bryan Herta Autosport Hyundai Elantra N TCR.

The WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca 120 gets underway at 4:40 p.m. PT with live coverage on Trackpass on NBC Sports Gold and IMSA Radio.
