Robert Alon has scored a shock overall pole for Sunday’s Continental Tire Road Race Showcase at Road America.

The Silver-rated driver stormed to a 1:51.933 lap time in the No. 85 JDC-Miller Motorsports Oreca 07 Gibson to give an LMP2 car its third consecutive pole in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition.

Alon, who has four career Prototype Challenge class poles, shares driving duties of the “Banana Boat” JDC-Miller entry with Simon Trummer.

“I have to give it to the engineer,” Alon said. “He called it. We knew tire deg was going to be pretty bad, so we kind of set up the car for the first couple of laps.

“We knew those were going to be the best tires, grip-wise.

“He told me to go out and do my thing for the first two laps and it seemed like the car just did the work. It was a great setup.”

Ricky Taylor will start second in the No. 7 Team Penske Acura ARX-05, ahead of Canadian Tire Motorsport Park winner Colin Braun, who made it two Orecas in the top-three overall in the No. 54 CORE autosport entry.

The No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R of Renger van der Zande was fourth, with Juan Pablo Montoya completing the top-five in the No. 6 Penske Acura DPi.

The Continental Tire Road Race Showcase gets underway Sunday at 1:35 p.m. CDT, with live coverage on FS1.
