Franzoni Set for DPi Debut with Juncos

Road to Indy star Victor Franzoni is set for his DPi debut, having been confirmed in Juncos Racing’s Cadillac DPi-V.R for this weekend’s Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix at Belle Isle.

The 23-year-old Brazilian will join season-long driver Will Owen in the No. 50 Cadillac DPi, in what has featured a rotation of co-drivers this year.

TC2000 ace Agustín Canapino took part in the opening two rounds, alongside the team’s Michelin Endurance Cup driver Rene Binder, with Kyle Kaiser in the car for the two most recent rounds at Long Beach and Mid-Ohio.

It will mark the second IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship start for 2017 Pro 2000 champion Franzoni, who was a part of the Via Italia Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 lineup in January’s Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Franzoni competed with Juncos in both Pro 2000 and Indy Lights competition and remains active with the team in driver coaching.

“I’m super excited to be back with Juncos Racing and be a part of their Cadillac DPi-V.R program,” he said. “I’ve been racing with the team for a few years now, we have built a great chemistry and produced great results.

“I am looking forward to working with Will Owen since he has a lot of experience with this type of car, and this will be my first time in this type of car. We will work hard and look for a great result in Detroit.”

No word has been given if Franzoni’s drive is a one-off or could lead to future outings this year.

Juncos is one of a handful of WeatherTech Championship teams coming off last weekend’s Indianapolis 500, a race that was won by Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud.
