Porsche Penske’s Campbell Quickest on Friday at Indy

Matt Campbell led the way in opening IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship practice for this weekend’s Battle on the Bricks, topping the time charts for Porsche Penske Motorsport.

Campbell reeled off a best lap of 1:15.184 in his No. 7 Porsche 963 to edge out the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport Acura ARX-06 of Filipe Albuquerque by 0.022 seconds.

Sebastien Bourdais was third quickest in the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Cadillac V-Series.R, with the pair of Team RLL-run BMW M Hybrid V8s completing the top-five.

LMP2 was led by the No. 11 TDS Racing Oreca 07 Gibson of Mikkel Jensen, while Garett Grist topped the time charts in LMP3 aboard the No. 30 Jr III Racing Ligier JS P320 Nissan.

Jack Hawksworth was quickest in the production-based ranks in the GTD Pro class No. 14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3, thanks to a 1:23.636 lap time set late in the running.

It bumped the GTD class-leading No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 of Patrick Gallagher to second, with the No. 78 Forte Racing by US RaceTronics Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2 of Loris Spinelli third and second in GTD.

The 90-minute opening WeatherTech Championship session featured two red flags, the first for the No. 77 Wright Motorsports Porsche of Alan Brynjolfsson, who spun off into the Turn 6 gravel.

It was followed by an apparent engine-related issue for the No. 94 Andretti Autosport Aston Martin Vantage GT3 of Jarett Andretti, who stopped on track in Turn 7 to bring out a second red.

Practice 2 gets underway Saturday at 8:55 a.m. EDT.
