Porsche is not expecting to make any further “big updates” to its 963 prototype according to LMDh factory director Urs Kuratle, who indicated “that’s it, probably” in terms of any significant developments to the car.

The German manufacturer rolled out a comprehensive aero update to the Multimatic-chassied LMDh car this year, which resulted in the fourth Evo joker usage out of five available through 2027.

Kuratle reaffirmed no plans to use the final joker, which will presumably expire, although manufacturers are permitted to use up to two additional jokers between the 2028 and 2029 seasons.

“There are things we’re going to change for next year but it’s no [big] updates, no aero, no nothing,” he said.

“Whatever we are able to do outside the jokers, we will obviously try to do, which includes software and small things.”

Kuratle pointed to the fact that the car only currently competes in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and the factory Porsche Penske Motorsport squad being the only team in 2026-spec, that there’s no need for any future significant updates.

“It’s partially a reason,” he said. “You also have to ask yourself whether the investment is worth doing. That’s the thing.

“As it stands now, from a technical standpoint, it will be no significant update on the car and that’s what we know for now.

“I’m not saying no more in the lifetime of the car but as it stands now, as we know now… [no more updates].”

When asked to rate the season with the new aero package, Kuratle said the car made a “significant step” forward in a number of areas.

“The update was really good,” he said. “We’re much better this year than we’ve been last year.

“Technically, the car was much better this year. That update, which was a big one we did from last year to this season, that was a big investment and a big job but the guys did a great job.

“That’s it, probably, for the 963, when it comes to big updates.”

The 2027 WeatherTech Championship season could be Porsche’s final year in factory competition with the car, as its five-year contract with Team Penske will come to an end.

The contract was agreed upon by all parties at the start of the program in 2023.

Kuratle: Porsche Has No Limitation on Number of Customer 963s

Despite no customer Porsche 963s set to be on the grid for the upcoming Asian Le Mans Series season, which sees the launch of a privateer Hypercar class, Kuratle hasn’t ruled out such prospects in the years to come.

Algarve Pro Racing came close to fielding two 963s but stood down due to a number of factors.

“From our side we would have been ready to do it,” said Kuratle. “Then we offer the cars and the potential customers have to finance it and they have to buy the cars and sign the contracts.

“We were in good talks. If that comes up next year, or at one point, for next year’s season, we are more than happy to talk to customers.

When asked if there’s a limit of cars that Porsche could support, Kuratle said they can adjust to the market demand.

“We don’t have a limitation of two, four or whatever cars,” he said. “We can support a lot. We have to adapt our customer support to the demand.”
