Wickens Poised for Full Season GTD Program in 2027

Robert Wickens is poised to step up to a full season IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship drive next year, alongside Mason Filippi.

Sportscar365 has learned that the duo, who currently drive DXDT Racing’s Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R in the sprint race portion of the season, are likely to be full time co-drivers in the GTD ranks next year.

Filippi has been on season-long driving duties this year, although was joined by Salih Yoluc and Corvette factory driver Charlie Eastwood for the Michelin Endurance Cup rounds.

It comes amid an expected increased involvement by Hanley Motorsports, a partner that joined the David Askew-owned DXDT operation at the start of the year and has supported Filippi’s career.

Former Porsche Carrera Cup North America driver Robert Hanley also currently holds a partnership with Bryan Herta Autosport that’s set to conclude at the end of the season.

When asked by Sportscar365 on such prospects, DXDT program manager Bryan Sellers alluded to a return with Hanley Motorsports, Wickens and Filippi in a potential full-time role next season.

Wickens, who incidentally is making his GTD Endurance Cup debut this weekend in an unexpected call-up after Yoluc was unable to travel due to a family emergency, said he’s “quite positive” at the moment on a full season ride but said he won’t take anything for granted until it’s officially signed.

“As a driver, I feel like we’ve all been down this road where you think something’s happening and it takes a turn,” he told Sportscar365.

“I just want to keep focusing on the job at hand this weekend and then the next race after that and keep showing week in, week out that I deserve the chance that I believe I deserve.

“You have to earn everything in this sport, especially to race at these high levels, you can’t take anything for granted.

“We’ll keep plugging away, keep doing what I need to do. But as we sit today, I’m confident what the future holds and how the conversations are leading.

“I feel like this time last year vs. this year, I have much more opportunity for the future today than I had this time last year. Everything’s quite positive at the moment.”

Sportscar365 understands Wickens and Filippi’s GTD effort is expected to be part of a wider program that will be announced next month.
