Will Bamber dominated the final race of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America season at Monza to ensure he finished runner-up in the standings, while there was a thrilling fight for second.
The No. 133 XONINE Racing driver qualified on pole and soon pulled clear at the start, building a two-second lead after just one racing lap.
Bamber continued to lead thereafter either side of the mandatory stops and eventually crossed the line 6.111 seconds clear to secure his fifth win of the season.
While he was untroubled out front, the battle for second was frenetic with Nick Persing initially holding the position in the No. 101 Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2.
But a charging Jaden Conwright in the No. 127 SP Motorsports machine passed both newly crowned champion Elias De La Torre and then jumped Persing at Lesmo 2 on the sixth lap of 24.
Joaquin Morillo initially continued to hold second having taken over from Conwright after the stops but had Persing’s teammate Hampus Ericsson and Dennis Lind — in for De La Torre — right on his tail.
Lind attempted a move on Ericsson at the first Lesmo on lap 17, but this sent Ericsson to the outside and enabled him to go all the way round Morillo at Lesmo 2 with Lind then also squeezing through.
Lind hounded Ericsson to the flag and briefly got ahead with a few minutes to go before an error at Ascari handed the place back to Ericsson and Lind had to settle for third after his dominant victory alongside De La Torre on Thursday.
The Pro-Am Cup win again went to champions Danny Formal and Graham Doyle in the No. 110 WTR entry with Formal charging by Morillo with a couple of laps to go to finish fourth overall.
The sister No. 141 WTR car of Marc Miller had led the Pro-Am class in the opening stages, before falling back in the second half of the race including a spin for Paul Nemschoff, while Am conqueror David Staab again triumphed in that division in the No. 148 Precision Performance Motorsports Lamborghini.
The LB Cup title was the only one yet to be decided before this race but there was drama for Rocky T Bolduc, who led the class in the early laps.
But he retired to the pits in the second half of the race with a suspected driveshaft problem on his No. 199 Topp Racing machine and this ensured TB Autosports’ Philippe Touchette sealed the title in style with a fourth class win of the season.
RESULTS: Race 2
