Kujala, Piquet Jr. Take Portimao Poles

Patrick Kulaja and Nelson Piquet Jr. claimed pole position for the two final Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America races of the season during the Lamborghini Grand Finals event at Portimao.

Kujala charged to pole in the first of two 20-minute session by setting a best lap of 1:42.201 in the No. 150 O’Gara Motorsport/Change Racing/USRT Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2.

The Finnish driver beat former Grand Prix racer Piquet Jr. to pole by 0.180 seconds, with Loris Spinelli slotting into third aboard the No. 188 Taurino Racing by D Motorsports entry.

The top five was rounded out by Danny Formal and Edoardo Liberati.

John Castro Dubets led the Pro-Am standings for Precision Performance Motorsports just ahead of Am-class pole sitter Jordan O’Brien. Charlie Martin captured pole in LB Cup.

In the second session, Piquet improved from second to first, posting a best lap of 1:42.749 in the No. 130 ANSA Motorsports car to go quickest overall.

The Brazilian only just outpaced newly crowned Pro-class champion Kyle Marcelli, with the Canadian’s No. 101 Wayne Taylor Racing car just 0.047 seconds slower.

Billy Johnson’s No. 171 TPC Racing entry was third, with the entire top three covered by just 0.061 seconds.

Pro-Am championship leader Bryan Ortiz took class pole and rounded out the overall top four for Precision Performance Motorsports.

In Am, the No. 148 PPM car of Nikko Reger beat out MCR Racing’s Shehan Chandrasoma while LB Cup pole for Race 2 went to NTE Sport’s Fred Roberts.

The first race for the North American teams at Portimao gets underway Friday at 12 p.m. CEST (6 a.m. ET) with live coverage on Lamborghini Squadra Corse’s YouTube channel.
