A glimpse of what could have been Audi’s most efficient prototype has been revealed, in the form of a scale model of the stillborn 2017-spec R18.

Ex-Audi LMP1 drivers Filipe Albuquerque, Oliver Jarvis and Loic Duval all posted images of the model on social media on Friday, taken during an event in Germany recognizing the German manufacturer’s 18-year run in prototype racing.

The car, which had been under development months before the axing of the program in October, was never fully built, and based on the scale model, featured significant aero updates.

Head of Audi LMP1 Stefan Dreyer proclaimed that it would have been “the car to beat.”

“Obviously it had not tested yet but it was very far in development and very far in getting it built,” Dreyer told Sportscar365.
