United Autosports has announced that Hiroshi Hamaguchi will join the team’s McLaren LMGT3 lineup at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in place of Josh Caygill.

Caygill was recently confirmed as the sixth and final driver for the team’s FIA World Endurance Championship squad, but will step aside at the French endurance classic in favor of another Bronze-rated driver in Hamaguchi.

The Japanese racer has competed in Lamborghini machinery for the vast majority of his career, most notably in Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Endurance Cup, Michelin Le Mans Cup, the Asian Le Mans Series and Intercontinental GT Challenge.

“I am thrilled to be a part of the McLaren GT programme in the Le Mans 24 Hour race,” said Hamaguchi.

“The first time coming back since their memorable victory back in 1995. I have only done GT3 sprint races in La Sarthe but managed to win the race twice which shows I have a good compatibility with the track.”

The lineup for the No. 95 McLaren 720S GT3 Evo is set to undergo further change ahead of the French endurance classic, as Silver-rated driver Nico Pino will join Ben Keating and Ben Hanley in United’s No. 23 Oreca 07 Gibson instead.

A statement released by the Anglo-American squad on Tuesday stated that the third driver, who will join Hamaguchi and compatriot Marino Sato, “will be revealed in due course.”

“It’s great to welcome Hiroshi to our Le Mans team,” said United Autosports CEO Richard Dean.

“He has a strong history of GT racing, has celebrated GT success with McLaren and wants to make history at Le Mans. We are united in our goals.”
