Defending Nürburgring 24 winners Scherer Sport PHX will make the partial switch to Porsche machinery as part of a two-car effort for this year’s edition of the Eifel endurance classic.
The German squad will field one Porsche 911 GT3 R and one Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II for the second round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge calendar, which takes place on June 19-22.
The switch to Porsche marks a significant move for the team, as it secured five of its seven N24 victories with Audi machinery, including two wins in the last three editions.
Notably, it does have previous N24 history with Porsche, as it operated the car that Bernd Maylaender, Michael Bartels, Uwe Alzen and Altfrid Heger took to victory in 2000.
The team will still continue to field a single Audi in the Eifel endurance classic, which will notably run on Yokohama tires in contrast to the Michelin-shod Porsche.
“Competing in the top class with a new brand is a challenge that we are happy to accept,” said team boss Ron Moser.
“We have invested a lot of work in optimally preparing our team for the 911 GT3 R. We have already refined the setup during tests.
“At the same time, we still have an intensive program ahead of us. The NLS2 race is the next stage, as it will be the first time we face the competition. The objective is clear: of course we want to fight for the best places.”
Reigning SP9 Pro-Am class winner Patric Niederhauser will share the No. 16 Porsche with Patrick Pilet for this weekend’s four-hour NLS round. Pilet previously took overall victory at the N24 with Manthey Racing in 2018.
Further drivers for the effort are yet to be revealed, although Sportscar365 understands that reigning Hypercar world champion Laurens Vanthoor as well as defending N24 winner Ricardo Feller are likely to form part of the driver lineup.
Notably, the team has also enlisted Sebastien Breuil to form part of its efforts. The Frenchman returns to the team after he served as technical director for its DTM and GT3 efforts between 2018 and 2019.
He also guided Pierre Kaffer, Frank Stippler, Dries Vanthoor and Fred Vervisch to victory as race engineer at the 2019 edition of the Eifel classic, while he worked as GT3 project manager for Comtoyou Racing when that squad won the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa last year.
