Lamborghini factory driver Sandy Mitchell will fill in for Giacomo Altoe in this weekend’s Fanatec GT World Challenge America powered by AWS round at Virginia International Raceway.
Mitchell, the reigning Intelligent Money British GT Championship overall champion, will line up alongside TR3 Racing’s full-season driver Ziad Ghandour in the No. 9 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo.
He takes the seat of fellow factory driver Altoe, who is competing in this weekend’s Nürburgring 24 with FFF Racing Team.
The postponement of the 24 Hours of Le Mans to August ultimately led to SRO America moving the date of the VIR race forward by one week, thus creating the clash, which has seen several series competitors take different priorities.
Points leader Andrea Caldarelli has prioritized VIR over being part of his own team’s efforts at the Nürburgring, which Altoe had been confirmed since the start of FFF Team’s N24 program.
While it will mark 21-year-old Mitchell’s GTWC America debut, he did contest the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America season in 2019 and has previous experience of the 3.27-mile VIR circuit, having set the track record at the time.
A total of 16 cars are entered for the third round of the season, with track action kicking off on Friday.
