Robby Foley said he knew where he was strongest with his Turner Motorsports BMW M4 GT3 EVO to power past AF Corse’s Frederik Schandorff for the Desder Indianapolis 8 Hour Pro class win, along with the GT World Challenge America powered by AWS Pro championship for he and co-driver Justin Rothberg.
The title marked Foley, Rothberg and the Will Turner-led team’s third consecutive GTWC America title and their first in the Pro class.
All eyes focused on the final two hours in the fight for the class and championship honors between Foley and Schandorff, who was aiming to give his AF Corse co-driver, Matias Perez Companc, the season-long title.
The BMW factory driver passed Schandorff twice, both on the Dane’s out laps from pit stops, with the ultimate move for the class win, and title, coming with one hour to go.
“I knew where I was strong,” Foley told Sportscar365, describing his first pass on the No. 12 AF Corse Ferrari 296 GT3 Evo. “His car was very good, too, and he was doing a good job positioning it.
“I basically tried to bide my time, wait for some traffic and a few mistakes, and see where I could find an opportunity. I didn’t want to throw it away.
“Then I could fake him out into Turn 1. He went a little bit wide, and that’s how I got it. From there, I just tried to set sail. The Turner guys and girls gave me an absolute rocket ship. Our car was great in clear air today.”
Will Turner added: “Robby’s always calculating. Like when he’s on his sim, he’s calculating, and whenever he’s in one of my cars, he’s a super-calculating driver.
“I think he was feeling out the Ferrari during his first time behind him. He knew he had to make the move.
“If we finished second, we wouldn’t have won the championship, so we had to do that. He turned it up, and it was a super impressive drive.”
Foley believes Saturday’s run, along with their efforts throughout the GTWC America season, continued to showcase the team’s performance that led to a hat-trick of titles.
“Just consistency,” he added. “A consistent group of people and just everybody working towards one goal.
“Justin keeps improving, myself included. Everybody within the team. We just try our best every weekend and then just see what happens.
“I think that approach has worked well for us in all championships so we’ll just keep it up and try to keep improving.”
