GTWC Asia Targeting Six Events Next Year

Six rounds across four countries have been proposed for the 2022 Fanatec GT World Challenge Asia powered by AWS season, according to the provisional calendar announced on Sunday by SRO Motorsports Group.

After the last two seasons were canceled due to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic in the Asia-Pacific region, GTWC Asia is targeting a May kick-off for its upcoming campaign at Sepang.

That date is subject to finalization, with the first confirmed fixture due to take place at Suzuka on July 16-17. All events will consist of two one-hour races.

GTWC Asia will remain in Japan for a second July round at Fuji Speedway, followed by a one-month gap to an event at Buriram in Thailand.

Sepang has been agreed to host the only round in September, while the championship is hoping to organize a race weekend in China to round out the campaign.

GTWC Asia has been the hardest-hit of SRO Motorsports Group’s series during the coronavirus pandemic, and was the only one of the four GT World Challenge competitions to have full seasons canceled outright.

Logistical difficulties and quarantine periods for teams and personnel based in different east Asian countries have hampered the championship’s efforts to stage events. 

A statement from GTWC Asia indicated that the announced schedule for next year is provisional “subject to travel restrictions lifting across most of the region.”
