Dries Vanthoor has continued his domination of the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup weekend at Hungaroring, securing pole position for the Qualifying Race during Saturday morning’s qualifying session.
The Belgian driver set a lap time of 1:42.537 in the final ten-minute shootout to put his No. 5 Audi R8 LMS on pole, after the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT driver topped both of Friday’s Free Practice sessions.
He will share the car with Marcel Fassler in the one-hour Qualifying Race to decide the grid for Sunday’s Main Race.
“WRT have given us a really good car for this weekend and we did already good in FP1 and FP2 so we knew we had a strong car for qualifying,” said Vanthoor. “I have been struggling in quali this year so I am happy to change the trend.
“The No. 63 Lamborghini guys have been strong and proved they are quick, they are at the front in the championship standings but we have worked hard this season and finally found something so we can be really competitive.”
Mirko Bortolotti put the No. 63 Grasser Racing Team Lamborghini Huracan GT3 into second position, going 0.171 seconds slower than the polesitter.
Maxi Buhk, meanwhile, qualified his Mercedes-AMG GT3 in third position for HTP Motorsport while the No. 3 WRT Audi of Jake Dennis will line up alongside him.
AKKA ASP has ended Rinaldi Racing’s run at the top of the Pro-Am timesheets so far this weekend, with Total 24 Hours of Spa winner Jules Gounon securing the class pole from sixth overall.
AF Corse’s Phil Quaife and Lorenzo Case head up the Silver Cup field, while the Kessel Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 – the sole Am Cup entry – will start from 20th overall.
The Qualifying Race will start at 3:50 p.m. local time and will be streamed live on the GT World YouTube channel.
