James Sofronas claimed victory in Race 1 of the GT America powered by AWS weekend at Road America, having fended off a challenge from the debuting Memo Gidley.

The GMG Racing team owner/driver took his No. 14 Audi R8 LMS ultra to a 3.672-second win over Gidley’s No. 101 TKO with Flying Lizard Bentley Continental GT3.

Having jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag, Sofronas controlled the 40-minute contest, which ran caution-free.

Championship leader Charlie Luck finished third in the No. 45 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R following a pass on Jason Daskalos’ Audi on Lap 7.

Luck not only collected more points in the overall championship but also claimed victory in the Masters class.

Contact between Daskalos and the No. 460 Flying Lizard Porsche of Andy Wilzoch resulted in Daskalos initially losing a position until race control ordered for Wilzoch to surrender fourth.

The two fought until the checkered flag, with Daskalos slowing on the final lap with a suspected mechanical issue.

Jason Harward in the No. 88 Zelus Motorsport Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo completed the top-five despite an off course excursion late in the running.

GT4 class honors went to the No. 119 Stephen Cameron Racing BMW M4 GT4 of Sean Quinlan, who enjoyed an early race battle with the Jason Bell-driven No. 2 GMG Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT4.

Bell had to settle for third in class, thanks to a last-lap move by Chris Cagnazzi in the No. 39 RENNtech Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4.

Race 2 gets underway Sunday at 8:30 a.m. CT with live coverage on SRO’s GT World YouTube page.
