Corvette Confirms Second Car for Daytona; Sorensen Added

Corvette Racing confirmed Friday that it will field a second Chevrolet Corvette C8.R in next month’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona, with Marco Sorensen making his debut with the factory Pratt & Miller-run squad.

The Aston Martin Racing factory driver will join full-season FIA World Endurance Championship co-drivers Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy in the No. 4 Corvette alongside the previously announced No. 3 entry of Antonio Garcia, Jordan Taylor and Nicky Catsburg that will run for the full WeatherTech Championship.

Chevrolet had initially only confirmed a single Corvette entry in the new-for-2022 GTD Pro class although had not ruled out a second car appearing at some of the longer-distance events, such as Daytona.

Both will compete in slightly modified form compared to the now-defunct GT Le Mans class, with the addition of anti-lock brakes, a revised aero package and slightly less power to bring it in line with full FIA GT3-homologated machinery.

Sorensen is a two-time FIA World Endurance champion in the GTE-Pro ranks.

“It’s a great opportunity for me personally to be with this team and try to achieve together the result that everyone is wanting – that’s of course winning,” he said.

“I love the mentality of Corvette Racing. It has a great car and from what I know, there are some really great people that I will team up with. So I’m really looking forward to this.

“Corvette Racing has always been a standout team to me because of the way they go racing. They go race and they race hard.

“They have been around for a very long time so to have the opportunity to go with the team to Daytona is a great one.”

It’s understood Alexander Sims, who will join Milner and Tandy for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, holds a contract with GM for the French endurance classic only this year.
