Wittmann Leads BMW 1-2 in Lausitzring FP2

Marco Wittmann set the pace in second DTM practice at the Lausitzring, leading Sheldon van der Linde who caused a red flag earlier in the session by stopping on track.

Wittmann reeled off a lap of 1:32.035 behind the wheel of his No.11 Walkenhorst Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 in the second half of the session to go quickest of all.

The two-time DTM champion was a mere 0.035s faster than Schubert Motorsport driver Van der Linde.

The South African took second place in the session despite bringing his No. 31 BMW to a halt on track with just under 18 minutes left on the clock.

He was quickest at the time of the stoppage and was ultimately only surpassed by Wittmann when the session resumed after some five minutes under red flag.

The red BMW was towed back to pitlane and would take no further part in proceedings.

Van der Linde therefore only completed ten laps, significantly less than the rest of the field.

SSR Performance’s Dennis Olsen was third, with Maro Engel and Mikael Grenier fourth and fifth respectively.

Margins in the second and final practice session of the weekend were tight, with the top ten runners separated by just over three tenths of a second.

Van der Linde’s Schubert teammate Philipp Eng was sixth ahead of Luca Stolz, Lucas Auer and Kelvin van der Linde.

Thomas Preining rounded out the top ten in his No. 24 KUS Team Bernhard Porsche 911 GT3 R, the Austrian’s best effort 0. 368 seconds behind the quickest time set by Wittmann.

The first qualifying session of the weekend takes place on Saturday morning, 10:30 a.m. local time.

RESULTS: Practice 2
