GWR Australia Joins Grid for Final Rounds with Kavich

GWR Australia has confirmed its driver for its first tilt at the Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia, with production car ace Ben Kavich set to contest the final two rounds of the season at Sydney Motorsport Park and Sandown.

The Garth Walden-run Sydney-based team has recruited Kavich, who will drive the No. 11 Team Thryv/Race For A Cure Mustang Dark Horse R.

Kavich and GWR Australia are a familiar pairing, with Kavich, brother Michael and Supercars ace Thomas Randle claiming victory in this year’s Bathurst 6 Hour, driving the GWR-prepared BMW M2 Competition.

Kavich has been a fixture of the Australian scene for close to 20 years, competing in V8 Utes and Production Cars and every Bathurst 6 Hour since its inception in 2016.

The entry has support from small business marketing software provider Thryv, while the Kavichs’ own charity Race For A Cure will also be prominently featured on the Mustang.

Race For A Cure is a charitable organisation founded by the Kavich family to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer clinical trials research — a cause close to Kavich’s heart following his wife Toula’s diagnosis a decade ago.

“It’s something that we wanted to do and we’re looking forward to it,” commented Kavich. “A big part of our racing is the Team Thryv/Race For A Cure program, which raises money for breast cancer trials research.

“Plenty of fans may have seen what it’s all about through our Bathurst 6 Hour entries, but if they haven’t, Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia provides another platform to raise awareness.

“My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer not long after competing in the first Bathurst 6 Hour and it was her idea to create Race for a Cure. For my brother Michael and I, it was a way to use our passion through our racing to help the wider community through something that has touched us.

“Our mother and grandmother had been touched by breast cancer as well, so by the time my wife was diagnosed it was something we became really passionate about.

“For us, Sydney Motorsport Park is our closest home track. We can hear the cars on track from our offices, so it’s the perfect place to debut. I haven’t competed at Sandown since my V8 Utes days, but I love the place and it has an incredible history.

“It’s a toe in the water experience for us and we would like to continue in the series for 2027.”

Founded in 2014, GWR Australia has emerged as a leading team on the national scene featuring on the grid of categories including GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS, Monochrome GT4 Australia and Radical Cup Australia.

Kavich will bolster an already competitive Dark Horse Legends field, which is set to descend on Sydney Motorsport Park on September 18-20.
