Andrzej Lewandowski sealed a third Lamborghini World Finals title with victory in the second Am/LB Cup race at Monza, while Rocky T Bolduc secured the LB Cup crown.
Auto Sport Racing Services driver Lewandowski previously won the Pro-Am title in 2019 and the Am crown in 2022 and looked well placed to take this year’s Am glory as well after winning Saturday’s opening contest and starting the decider on pole.
But Stephane Lemeret blasted into the lead at the start in his CMR Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 after diving inside the first corner but cut then cut the second part of the chicane.
He gave the place back to Lewandowski at the Parabolica on the following lap but was still awarded a five-second penalty for skipping the corner.
Lemeret remained glued to the back of Lewandowski throughout the opening stint but Rodrigue Gillion inherited the lead during the mandatory stops when he took over the No. 27 CMR machine.
Lewandowski was back ahead at the Roggia chicane on the next lap, however, and looked on course for a comfortable victory until a late safety car when Raffaele Giannoni collided with Francesco Galli at Ascari provided a reset.
Lewandowski stayed ahead of Gillion on the one-lap shootout once the caution ended to provisionally triumph, but there was originally a question mark over the result amid a potential pit lane speed investigation surrounding the champion.
The Pole was investigated for driving too slowly in the pit lane to ensure he did not breach the minimum stop time but was merely reprimanded.
The penalty for Lemeret and Gillion had more consequence as it dropped them to seventh in the classification, while the No. 174 SP Motorsports car of Paul Whiting and Daniel Morillo and the No. 189 89x Motorsports entry of Johan Schwartz and Michael Fitzpatrick also received sanctions for cutting the chicane at the start and a short pit stop, respectively.
These penalties meant North America Am champion David Staab, fifth across the line, was promoted to second, and the final spot on the podium went to Schwartz and Fitzpatrick.
The battle to take the LB Cup title was delicately poised in the first part of the race as polesitter Bolduc fell to fourth and closest rival Claude-Yves Gosselin was running in second, meaning the pair were on course to tie on points.
But Gosselin’s Scuderia Villorba Corse Lamborghini was spun by Philippe Touchette in the closing stages and sent plummeting down to sixth in the division, while class leader Philip Tang cut the chicane on the safety car restart amid a battle with Petar Matic.
The various shenanigans left Bolduc’s Topp Racing machine second at the flag behind Christopher Koebbe (Forty7 Motorsports).
That result was more than enough for Bolduc to seal the crown and make up for his disappointment of missing out on the North American title earlier in the Monza event.
