As previously reported on Sportscar365, the new sprint series is aimed to develop the Asian market. The ACO expects the Asian Le Mans Series to benefit from the launch of the new sprint series.
“With the Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup the ACO is taking another step in its implantation on the Asian continent as well as giving the LM P3 category a new playing field,” ACO President Pierre Fillon said.
The three-round championship, which will be held at Sepang, will feature two one-hour races per weekend, with each two-driver lineup requiring at least one Silver-rated driver. Next to LMP3 and CN cars, GT Cup will also be eligible.
“This complementary series was absolutely necessary for teams running LM P3s and CNs,” Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup Managing Director Cyrille Taesch Wahlen said.
“With a single venue leading to reduced costs, and a format and track time adapted to the needs of teams racing small prototypes and GT Cup cars, the Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup will be the perfect launch pad for teams wishing to move up to the Asian LMS.”
