Augusto Farfus has received an unexpected call up to compete in next weekend’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, as a substitute driver in BMW Team RLL’s lineup for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season-opener.
BMW announced Sunday that the Brazilian will take the place of Tom Blomqvist, who has experienced delays with his visa application.
Farfus will share the No. 25 BMW M8 GTE with Connor De Phillippi, Philipp Eng and Colton Herta.
“I love the Rolex 24 At Daytona,” said Farfus, who is set for his sixth Rolex 24 appearance. “I know the team, the car and the circuit very well and am ready for this challenge.”
Blomqvist was announced last month as Team RLL’s new full-season driver alongside second-year factory star De Philippi, although is expected to be back for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and balance of the WeatherTech Championship season.
“I’m very disappointed that I am unable to race at Daytona,” said Blomqvist. “I will be back home with my fingers crossed for the whole team and looking forward to returning at Sebring.”
Team RLL’s sister GT Le Mans class entry will be driven by John Edwards, Jesse Krohn, Chaz Mostert and Alex Zanardi, who makes his North American racing return.
