2020 WeatherTech Championship Schedule Released

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will feature a nearly identical schedule in 2020, with the 12-event calendar having been released Friday during the sanctioning body’s annual ‘State of the Series’ address at Road America.

It will mark the third consecutive season with the same dozen events and venues, with only minor date changes.

The only notable change comes with a reduced six-round LMP2 schedule, which sees the elimination of the round at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, while the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona will not count towards championship points.

However, Michelin Endurance Cup points will still be awarded for LMP2 competitors at Daytona, as well as the three other Endurance Cup rounds at Sebring, Watkins Glen and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, which sees all four classes in action.

The new-for-2019 WeatherTech Sprint Cup also returns with an identical seven-round season for GT Daytona class cars, including the Detroit race, which remains a points-paying round for Sprint Cup-only competitors.

In addition, IMSA confirmed the annual Roar Before the Rolex 24 for Jan. 3-5, which will again be mandatory for all Rolex 24 participants.

As was the case this year, there will be no other IMSA-sanctioned testing.

“We’ve said it numerous times in the past, but one of the strongest attributes of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship continues to be the 12 events, facilities and promoter partners that make up our schedule each year,” said IMSA President Scott Atherton.

“There isn’t much in the way of ‘breaking news’ as it relates to our 2020 calendar – it’s the same 12 races on largely the same weekends as in 2019 – but that speaks to the strength of those events, the date equity we’ve earned over the past several years and the overall stability of IMSA.”

IMSA also confirmed the television package for 2020, which will see NBC network carry live coverage of the Rolex 24 and final two rounds of the season, with the Road America race shifting to CNBC due to NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

All races also will have live, flag-to-flag coverage in the U.S. on the NBC Sports App and NBCSports.com.
