Sergio Jimenez has claimed a breakthrough first overall Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America victory in the opening round of the weekend at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
It also marked the maiden win in series competition for ANSA Motorsports.
Jimenez, who led from the 2nd lap of the 50-minute race, held off a charge by Jacob Eidson in the No. 6 US RaceTronics Lamborghini following a late-race caution and restart.
The Brazilian led the field to the green with 9 minutes to go, which initially saw Eidson battle Pro class championship leader Madison Snow, who settled for third overall in the No. 16 Change Racing Lamborghini.
Danny Formal in ANSA’s No. 99 entry, appeared set to give the team a double victory on Saturday although lost the Pro-Am class lead on the final lap to the No. 63 Change entry of Corey Lewis.
Lewis shared top class honors with McKay Snow.
Formal had been in the lead at the time despite having served an early race drive-through penalty for an improper starting procedure.
The overall pole-sitting No. 46 PPM Lamborghini of Brandon Gdovic pitted on Lap 2 with reported fuel issues, which dropped Gdovic down the running order after a quick trip to the garage.
Gdovic was classified 14th overall.
Am class honors went to the No. 29 Change Racing entry of Victor Gomez, while John Hennessy claimed the win in LB Cup in his No. 33 US RaceTronics Lamborghini, despite an early race spin.
An issue for the No. 25 Prestige/WTR Lamborghini of Ashton Harrison, who stopped on track with steam billowing from the rear of the car, resulted in the race’s only full course caution with less than 20 minutes to go.
Harrison was the race’s only retirement.
Race 2 is set for a 10:25 a.m. PT start on Sunday with live coverage on IMSA.com/TVLive and on IMSA Radio.
