Andretti Autosport will make the step up to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for the remainder of the LMP3 season, having announced a move from its originally planned full-time IMSA Prototype Challenge campaign with Jarett Andretti.

Andretti, the son of the late John Andretti, will team up with Rolex 24 at Daytona class winner Oliver Askew in its Ligier JS P320 Nissan for next weekend’s Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio.

Additional LMP3 races on the WeatherTech Championship calendar include the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen, WeatherTech 240 at Watkins Glen, Road America round and the season-ending Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

It will mark the team’s return to top-level IMSA racing for the first time since 2008 when it campaigned an Acura ARX-01b LMP2 car in the American Le Mans Series under the Andretti Green Racing banner.

“We’re really proud of what Jarett and our LMP3 team has accomplished so far in the Prototype Challenge, and are looking forward to this next step into full WeatherTech SportsCar competition,” said Andretti Autosport chairman and CEO Michael Andretti.

“Continued sports car growth has always been on the radar for us at Andretti Autosport and this helps to set things in the right direction.

“I think Jarett and Oliver will make a great pairing for Mid-Ohio for our first official outing.”

Andretti’s co-driver for the remaining WeatherTech Championship LMP3 races have yet to be announced although Marco Andretti recently turned laps in the car during a test at Sebring, hinting towards potential one-off outings later in the year.

Jarett co-drove the opening two IPC races with Bronze-rated driver Tristan Herbert.

“This is an exciting time for our team and partners,” said Jarett. “From the start of the season our goal was always to compete in the WeatherTech races and we are excited to make the switch now and are excited to get started at Mid Ohio with Oliver.”
