John Farano has been transported to a hospital following a heavy accident in the opening stages of Sunday’s Motul Course de Monterey at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

The Tower Motorsports owner/driver nosed in his No. 8 Oreca 07 Gibson into the Turn 5 barriers to bring out the race’s third full-course caution.

IMSA’s safety team attended to Farano’s car for a considerable amount of time while under the yellow.

The sanctioning body confirmed the defending LMP2 class champion has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

A statement released Sunday evening by the team confirmed that Farano was sent to Natividad hospital for a “precautionary measure” and is in “good spirits” and will be released shortly.

“Tower Motorsports and John Farano would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the AMR medical team at the track and the staff at Natividad hospital for their incredible work and attentive care,” a team statement read.

“We would also like to thank IMSA for their swift and prompt support following the accident.”

Farano entered Sunday’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship round as the class points leader following the team’s overall podium finish in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.
