Will Bamber returned to victory lane in the second Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America race of the weekend at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, giving XONINE Racing its maiden overall victory.
Bamber, who joined the Illinois-based team this weekend after a split with TR3 Racing, drove his No. 33 Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 to victory over the Pro-Am class-winning No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing entry of Danny Formal, in a race that ended under full course caution.
It came after Bamber’s teammate, team co-owner/driver Darius Trinka, was forced to retire on his out lap in Saturday’s race with a driveshaft issue.
Elias De La Torre provisionally took the sole points lead in Pro with his and Dennis Lind’s second place finish in Race 1, although the No. 29 TR3 Racing Lamborghini retired in dramatic fashion on Sunday due to a fire from the engine bay.
It brought out the race’s first yellow on Lap 13.
Saturday’s Race 1 winners Nick Persing and Hampus Ericsson dropped out of contention at the start of the 50-minute race when Persing and the No. 27 SP Motorsports entry of Jayden Conwright made contact, spinning the WTR car around.
No further action was made by race control.
Ericsson, however, rebounded to a fourth place class finish in Pro, behind the No. 7 WTR entry of Al Morey and James Wallis.
The No. 4 ANSA Motorsports Lamborghini of Nico Jamin and Tommi Gore finished third overall, second in Pro.
The Pro-Am-entered No. 41 Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini of Marc Miller started from overall pole and led for most of the race until Miller pitted at the end of the extended pit window with 13 minutes to go.
However, the car dropped out of podium contention, easily handing the top class honors to Formal and Doyle for a sweep of the weekend with a second place finish overall.
It marked the duo’s fourth consecutive class win.
Anthony Bullock appeared to be en route to a sweep in the Am class until his No. 12 XONINE entry went off-course in the closing moments to bring out the race-ending yellow.
It handed the win to Precision Performance Motorsports’ David Staab.
Forty7 Motorsports driver Christopher Koebbe, meanwhile, came out on top in LB Cup, marking his first career win.
RESULTS: Race 2
