Undefeated in series’ competition this year, Danny Formal and Kyle Marcelli have taken pole positions for this weekend’s Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Formal reeled off a best lap of 1:24.493 in Q1 to put his Pro class championship-leading No. 1 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 on top.
His time was 0.259 seconds quicker than teammate Ryan Norman, with Giano Taurino qualifying third in the No. 88 TR3 Racing entry.
The session came to an early end due to an accident in Turn 5 for Paul Nemschoff in the No. 41 Flying Lizard Motorsports machine.
Carter Williams scored Pro-Am class pole for Race 1 in the No. 22 World Speed Lamborghini, while Glenn McGee (Precision Performance Motorsports) and Jon Hirshberg (Forte Racing by US RaceTronics) were on top in Am and LB Cup, respectively for this afternoon’s 50-minute race.
Q2, which had a delayed start due to track cleanup from Nemschoff’s incident, had another red flag for the No. 22 World Speed entry of Sean Prewet, who stopped in the final corner and later continued.
The session resumed with six minutes to go although ended after two further incidents in the closing minutes, which saw the checkered flag flown early for Norman slamming into the tire barriers in Turn 3.
The No. 89 NTE Sport Lamborghini of Mark Brummond, meanwhile, was seen in the Turn 6 gravel bed.
Marcelli’s 1:24.291 lap was 0.728 seconds of Norman, who lost his two best times for bringing out a red. Tyler Hoffman qualified third overall in his Am class PPM entry for Race 2.
Sebastian Saavedra and Keawn Tandon completed the top-five in Q2, with Tandon taking Pro-Am class pole in his NTE Sport Lamborghinio. Graham Doyle, meanwhile, picked up top qualifying honors in LB Cup.
