Riley Dickinson returned to victory lane for the first time since Watkins Glen to retake the Pro class points lead over title rival Ryan Yardley in the second race of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America weekend at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.
The Kellymoss driver dominated Friday’s 40-minute sprint race, leading every lap from pole position and setting the fastest racing lap in his No. 91 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car en route to a 2.329-second victory over Aaron Jeansonne to lead a team 1-2.
Dickinson, who reassumed the Pro class points lead in Race 1, led from the pole ahead of Jeansonne at the start with Topp Racing’s Tyler Maxson and Yardley behind, respectively.
With Dickinson opening a gap up front, a tight battle for second emerged with Jeansonne holding station over Race 1 winner Maxson behind and surviving firm and near race-long pressure from the Topp driver, who suddenly lost ground to teammate Yardley on the last lap.
Yardley’s third place sets up a final round shootout for the title with the Topp driver now just two points behind Dickinson leaving Road Atlanta.
Fourth place went to Zachary Vanier, who went wide into the grass out of the final corner in pursuit of Yardley, with Maxson sliding back to fifth overall at the checkered flag.
Alan Metni won out in Pro-Am after initially losing the class lead at the start to Patrick Mulcahy.
Metni brought the No. 99 Kellymoss entry back to the head of the Pro-Am field in the first half of the race and began to pull away, taking the class win 4.171 seconds clear of the GMG Racing driver.
Scott Blind completed a weekend sweep of the Masters class with an uncontested Race 2 win in his No. 45 Ruckus Racing 911.
Matheus Leist was assessed a ten-second post-race time penalty for not being in the proper column in the race’s two-row, rolling start.
On the opening lap, Todd Parriott spun at the start but continued on at Turn 4, before surviving another late-race spin at Turn 6.
Chris Bellomo came into the pits in the No. 68 Kellymoss machine in the final minutes of the race, just as Michael McCann went for a spin at Turn 8.
Peter Atwater nosed his No. 12 JTR Motorsports Engineering Porsche into the tire barriers after a spin out of Turn 7, though he managed to bring his car back to pit lane under his own power, thus nullifying the need for safety car intervention.
The 40-minute contest ran entirely green, with Bellomo as the race’s only retirement.
RESULTS: Race 2
