Former Porsche LMP1 technical director Alex Hitzinger has returned to the Volkswagen Group, as part of the German manufacturer’s increased focus on e-mobility.
Hitzinger had departed Porsche’s LMP1 program two years ago to take up a job at Apple in its electric car project.
Volkswagen announced on Wednesday that the 47-year-old German will take group-wide responsibility of VW’s self-driving vehicles and “mobility as a service.”
Hitzinger’s role will also include technical development at its commercial vehicles division.
The German automaker has pledged to invest $50 billion into developing autonomous and electric vehicles, with EVs have either already been launched in development from Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen.
