AF Corse is replacing the chassis of its No. 21 Ferrari 488 GTE Evo after the original was heavily damaged in an accident during Free Practice 2 at Spa-Francorchamps.
The Italian squad is aiming to tackle the third round of the FIA World Endurance Championship season on Saturday with its full stable of GTE-Am cars, having sent crew members back to its headquarters to source a spare chassis for the No. 21.
The car received extensive damage following a collision between Diego Alessi and fellow AF Corse driver Thomas Flohr towards the end of FP2 on Thursday.
Alessi was deemed at fault and penalized for the incident, in which he struck Flohr’s No. 54 Ferrari as the Swiss driver exited the pits at Raidillon.
AF Corse team manager Ron Reichert told Sportscar365 that while the No. 21 chassis is being replaced, the No. 54 was checked and repaired to take part in the rest of the event.
The process of examining two damaged cars required a late-night shift by crew members including those working on other AF Corse entries.
Reichert said that the damage on the No. 21 car would be assessed further after the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps and that he was unsure when the new chassis would arrive, as of Friday morning. The drive from Piacenza to Spa is 540 miles and takes more than 10 hours.
Free Practice 3 starts at 11 a.m. local time (5 a.m. ET) and GTE-Am qualifying is scheduled for 5 p.m. (11 a.m. ET).
