Two-time FIA World Endurance GT champion Nicki Thiim will make his DTM debut this year driving a Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo run by T3 Motorsport.

The Danish driver will become the first son of a former champion to race in the series, following on from his father Kurt who won the 1986 title in a Rover Vitesse and also competed as Mercedes works driver.

Thiim, 32, is also racing in the WEC this year with GTE-Am squad NorthWest AMR and won the opening round of the season at Sebring last weekend.

“It has always been clear that DTM was my DNA and that it has always just been about racing there,” he said.

“And now, having made it with T3 Motorsport after 20 years, the occasional detour and some title wins, absolutely is something special. I am happy to be able to race there as the first son of a DTM champion.”

Thiim joins the DTM grid in a second Lamborghini for T3 Motorsport, which previously announced the return of Esmee Hawkey to its lineup for the 2022 season.

The German team entered two cars last year with recent Walkenhorst Motorsport BMW signing Esteban Muth driving its other Lamborghini.

Thiim, who is an Aston Martin factory driver, faces a date clash between the DTM round at Spa and the WEC 6 Hours of Fuji in September along with two other drivers competing in both series. Audi drivers Rene Rast and Nico Mueller are also affected.

“The fact that Nicki Thiim as a two-time world champion is giving us his confidence is a real honor for us,” commented team principal Jens Feucht.

“He is highly motivated, he is a particularly likable driver, has clear ambitions and is keen to be in contention at the front of the field, just as we are. Signing Nicki Thiim is the next big step in the still brief history of our team.”
