Sheldon van der Linde set the fastest time of the weekend thus far to lead the second DTM Free Practice session at Oschersleben.

The defending champion reeled off a 1:21.960 aboard the No. 1 Schubert Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 to go quickest.

His teammate Rene Rast, piloting the No. 33 machine, took second place and was 0.143 seconds slower.

Van der Linde’s best time compared favorably to the 1:22.376 that Mirko Bortolotti set to top the opening session earlier on Friday afternoon.

Mattia Drudi completed the top three aboard the No. 40 Tresor Orange 1 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II.

The Italian’s best lap was just 0.005 seconds slower than Rast, while a pair of Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2s driven by Mick Wishofer and Franck Perera rounded out the top five.

Margins in the second session were once again tight, with Perera’s best lap just 0.217 seconds slower than Van der Linde.

Ricardo Feller and Christian Engelhart took sixth and seventh, just ahead of the No. 14 Emil Frey Racing Ferrari 296 GT3 of Jack Aitken.

Kelvin van der Linde’s No. 3 ABT Sportsline Audi came ninth, while Patric Niederhauser ensured both Tresor Orange 1 Audis were represented in the top ten by ending the session tenth.

Qualifying for the first race takes place on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. CEST (3:45 a.m. ET).

RESULTS: Free Practice 2
