Millroy Released from Shanghai Hospital After China GT Accident

Ollie Millroy has been released from a Shanghai hospital to continue his recovery at home.

The 36-year-old Briton sustained multiple injuries, including six broken ribs, a broken collarbone and a puncture lung in a serious accident in the China GT Championship round at Shanghai International Circuit two weeks ago.

Millroy was heroically pulled from his burning Ferrari 296 GT3 Evo by Loek Hartog, which made headlines around the globe.

He underwent multiple surgeries, primarily to his collarbone and to release fluids from his lung, before getting the all-clear from doctors to be released.

“Discharged from the hospital,” Millroy wrote on social media. “Exactly two weeks after my accident in Shanghai, I leave the hospital. My body still bandaged and carrying a bag full of medication, it’s time for me to continue my recovery at home.

“I will eventually fully recover from my injuries, but these past two weeks have changed my life forever. This experience has radically altered my perspective; I will never again take for granted what we have or the beauty of the world around us.

“Walking through the hospital doors tonight, for the first time, marked the beginning of a new chapter in my story.

“Live each day as if it were your last, cherish your loved ones, don’t waste your time and energy on trivial things or things that make you unhappy, and, as Loek Hartog taught us, look out for one another as a team. Life can be short, so let’s make the most of it!

“Thank you to the incredible team — doctors, surgeons, nurses and staff — at Shanghai United Family Hospital, and thank you all for your messages and the energy you sent me to help me heal.

“The road to recovery is still long, but at least I’ll be able to start it at home, surrounded by my children.”

Hartog visited Millroy in the hospital earlier this weekend prior to his discharge.

While Millroy hasn’t outlined his projected timeline for a return to racing, Inception Racing team manager Bas Leinders told Sportscar365 that he’s hoping to have him back in their lineup for January’s Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Fran Rueda will sub for Millroy in next month’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season-ending Motul Petit Le Mans.
