The No. 16 Scherer Sport PHX Porsche 911 GT3 R has been withdrawn from the 53rd Nürburgring 24 after Laurens Vanthoor’s heavy crash in Top Qualifying, the team has confirmed.

Vanthoor crashed the car, which he was due to shares with Ricardo Feller and Patric Niederhauser, in the opening stages of Friday’s pole position shootout for the 53rd running of the Eifel endurance classic.

The crash, which caused the session to be halted and pushed back to 4 p.m. CEST on Friday, inflicted significant front-end damage to the car after a heavy impact with the barriers at Schwedenkreuz.

A Scherer Sport PHX spokesperson confirmed to Sportscar365 that the No. 16 Porsche will not take part in this year’s edition of the Eifel endurance classic, bringing the SP9 field down to 26 cars.

Instead, the team is shifting its focus fully to the No. 1 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II, which will be driven by Christopher Haase, Luca Ludwig and Markus Winkelhock.

A revised schedule for Friday running has also been issued. Qualifying 3 has been shortened to a length of 65 minutes and will start at 4:40 p.m. CEST (10:40 a.m. EST).
