Speedworks Motorsport has become one of the first customers of Toyota’s new GR Supra GT4 car, and is set to compete with it in the Intelligent Money British GT Championship.

The long-time British Touring Car Championship competitor won the independent teams’ and drivers’ titles with a Toyota Avensis in 2017 and 2018.

It has now been chosen as a priority customer for Toyota’s new GT4 car, receiving one of the first six cars built by Toyota Motorsport GmbH.

The car will be driven by a Silver pairing of Sam Smelt, who raced in BTCC two years ago and in a Ford Mustang GT4 in British GT last year, and James Kell.

Kell, 22, only started racing two years ago but gained experience in the Ginetta GT4 SuperCup last year.

“We’re delighted to have been entrusted with running the new Toyota GR Supra GT4 in the British GT Championship this season,” said Speedworks team principal Christian Dick.

“Having been lucky enough to see the development and subsequent performance of the car up close myself in Spain, I can vouch for the fact that it is a tremendously impressive piece of kit – superbly built with plenty of grunt – and this program will dovetail really nicely with our BTCC commitments.”

TMG’s Florian von Hasselbach, senior engineer customer motorsport, added: “We are delighted to work with Speedworks to introduce the GR Supra GT4 car to Great Britain.

“There was large customer demand for this car so the process of selecting teams wasn’t easy.

“We put a priority on establishing strong technical relationships with these first customers so we can learn from them and optimize the support we deliver to all GR Supra GT4 owners in the future.
