The Maserati GT2 will make its global race debut in next weekend’s Fanatec GT2 European Series season finale at Paul Ricard with the LP Racing team.
Leonardo Gorini and Luca Pirri will share the No. 12 Maserati in the Pro-Am class, marking the first competitive outing for the Italian manufacturer’s latest GT racing product.
The Maserati GT2, which is based on the MC20 road car and powered by a 3-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, underwent its first track test in early March before being publicly unveiled at the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa in late June.
LP Racing’s impending debut with the car aligns with Maserati’s plans for it to appear on the GT2 Europe grid towards the end of the season.
“I am very excited to announce that LP Racing will be running the new Maserati GT2 at Circuit Paul Ricard,” said LP Racing team owner Pirri.
“We have followed the project and the development from the beginning, and we immediately decided to become a part of the great comeback of Maserati to GT racing.
“As a driver, I will have the honor to drive the car alongside Leonardo Gorini, who is both a friend and an incredible driver with great potential. Up until this final round of the Fanatec GT2 European Series, he was in the fight for the 2023 Am class title.
“YCOM, who has been appointed by Maserati to develop the GT2, has used all its great motorsport know-how to create a product like no other in this GT2 class, so kudos to them.
“Having raced the Maserati MC12 in 2006, I feel blessed to be back as a team principal and driver to support this great comeback.”
LP Racing conducted a first shakedown of its new car last week, in preparation for its race debut against cars from other GT2 brands including Audi, Porsche and KTM.
The Italian squad has run the Audi R8 LMS GT2 and the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport in the SRO Motorsports Group-run sprint series which is aimed at amateur drivers.
