Maserati has publicly unveiled its new GT2 car at Spa-Francorchamps ahead of a planned race debut in the “final stages” of this year’s Fanatec GT2 European Series.

The Maserati MC20 GT2 project was announced at Spa last year and the test car completed its first shakedown at the Varano circuit in Italy at the beginning of March.

As part of its public debut, chief test driver Andrea Bertolini will perform a demonstration lap on Saturday afternoon in the buildup to the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa.

Maserati, which was previously active in GT1 and GT4, is returning to sports car racing this year in SRO Motorsports Group’s amateur driver-focused GT2 platform.

As previously announced, the customer-targeted GT2 machine is powered by a race-prepared version of the 3-liter V6 Nettuno engine found in the road-going MC20.

“Our DNA and our spirit have always lain in racing,” said Maserati CEO Davide Grasso.

“Our story began and developed from the track to the road. The decision to return to track racing forms part of a thorough strategic framework, inaugurated this year with the debut in Formula E, to which we have now added our return to the world of GT competitions.

“Now more than ever we want to rekindle and nourish that competitive passion that has always characterized and motivated us to achieve major milestones.”

Maserati is plotting to make its Fanatec GT2 European Series debut in the season finale at Paul Ricard, while a full-season presence is on the agenda for next year.

“The return of Maserati to GT racing is of huge significance, particularly considering the legacy left by the MC12 in the SRO-promoted FIA GT and FIA GT1 World Championships between 2004 and 2010,” commented SRO founder and CEO Stephane Ratel.

“We are delighted Maserati has chosen the GT2 category for its return with the new MC20 GT2. It represents a huge boost for the category and I can’t wait to see many MC20s racing in the Fanatec GT2 European Series and in other series around the world.”
