Niko Colby claimed victory in Sunday’s Toyota GR Cup North America season finale at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, becoming the youngest race winner in series history at 14 years old, while Spike Kohlbecker secured the championship with TechSport Racing’s No. 15 entry after a race marked by multiple incidents and penalties.
Colby inherited the win in his No. 16 Copeland Toyota GR 86 Cup car following penalties to Jeremy Fletcher and Parker DeLong.
Will Robusto finished second in the No. 2 RVA Graphics Motorsports by Speed Syndicate entry, while teammate Max Schweid completed the podium in third.
TechSport driver Kohlbecker, meanwhile, overcame a five-second post-race penalty stemming from an on-track incident with the No. 22 Copeland entry of Fletcher to secure the championship.
It marked the second SRO America title of the day for TechSport, which also claimed the GT4 America Am class championship earlier Sunday morning with Frankie Muniz and Tyler Stone in the No. 30 Ford Mustang GT4.
Fletcher grabbed the early lead on the opening lap, moving ahead of the pole sitter DeLong .
The move sparked a flurry of position changes at the front of the field, with Fletcher, DeLong, Kohlbecker and Robusto trading positions in the opening minutes.
Kohlbecker eventually worked his way into second, setting up a battle for the lead between the two championship contenders.
With 38 minutes remaining, Kohlbecker made his first move for the lead, but Fletcher held his position and forced the No. 15 car off track to maintain the advantage.
The pair made contact again minutes later on the front straightaway, as Kohlbecker caught a strong draft behind Fletcher and nearly sent the driver of the No. 22 Toyota into the pit lane wall.
Both championship contenders received five-second post-race penalties for the incidents, effectively canceling each other out.
A nearly 20-minute full-course caution followed an incident involving Legends Cup leader Patrick Brunson in the No. 98 Eagles Canyon w/ Fast Track entry and Jay Thomas in the No. 70 Nitro Motorsports car, setting up a final 15-minute sprint to the finish.
Kohlbecker dropped back to seventh during the closing stages and later made contact with Robusto. The incident was reported to race control but did not result in a penalty.
DeLong also received a penalty in the closing minutes, further reshaping the running order and impacting the fight for the podium.
The penalties ultimately elevated Colby to the lead, allowing the teenager to win. The race finished under yellow following an incident involving Ethan Ayars in the No. 70 BSI Racing entry.
