Grasser Racing Team driver Martin Matzke has been involved a serious accident during a private test session at the Nogaro circuit last week. The Czech driver suffered serious injuries to his back and will remain in hospital for the time being.

Matzke had been confirmed by the Austrian team as one of its Blancpain Sprint Series drivers for the 2014 season. The 24-year-old was set to share a Lamborghini Gallardo FL2 GT3 with Austrian driver Sascha Halek.

No details have been released about the accident, but according to reports in the Czech media he was taken to a hospital in Toulouse, before being airlifted to the University Hospital Center of Bordeaux, where he underwent spinal surgery.

After his condition was stabilized Matzke has been airlifted to Liberec Hospital in the Czech Republic for further treatment.

Matzke will now start an intensive rehabilitation program, under the watchful eye of Czech neurosurgeons. The reports state that Matzke has regained movement in his legs and could make a full recovery from his injuries.

The Czech driver posted a message on his Facebook page today saying that he had not seen the car but that given the injuries he knew that crash had been ‘extreme’, but that he hopes to get well soon.

Sportscar365 sends wishes to him for a speedy recovery.
