Toyota GR Super Sport Concept Breaks Cover

Toyota’s new GR Super Sport road car undertakes track testing…

The road car that will form the basis of Toyota’s new Hypercar class challenger has begun track testing, with the Toyota GR Super Sport Concept completing laps at Fuji Speedway.

Toyota President and CEO Akio Toyoda is seen driving the camouflaged hypercar in a video released by Toyota Gazoo Racing (above).

Kamui Kobayashi was also present at the test of the soon-to-be-launched car, which features a 2.4-liter V6 engine from and many powertrain components from the Japanese manufacturer’s current TS050 Hybrid LMP1 car.

Coupled with a hybrid system, the GR Super Sport is expected to produce close to 1,000 horsepower.

No word has been given on when the hypercar will released.

Toyota, however, will not be required to complete a production run of 20 units, as its Hypercar race car will be derived from the FIA and ACO’s prototype-based regulations.

It’s prototype race car, meanwhile, is not expected to begin track testing until Summer 2020.
