Robinson Racing driver Shane Lewis was fastest in the opening GTS SprintX practice of the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Virginia in damp-but-drying conditions at Virginia International Raceway.

Only a few cars ventured out until the final 15 minutes of the session due to the wet track surface following heavy overnight rain at the circuit, but action picked up as the track began to dry.

In all, 23 cars turned representative lap times, headed up by Lewis in the No. 74 Mercedes-AMG GT4.

His best lap of 1:54.658 was a mere 0.007 seconds faster than the No. 21 Muehlner Motorsports North America Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR of Moritz Kranz and Gabriele Piana in second, while the No. 1 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R of Andy Pilgrim and Lawson Aschenbach was third.

GTS-Am class frontrunners Kris Wilson and Mark Klenin were fourth overall in the No. 62 McLaren 570S GT4 for KPR.

Seven different manufacturers were represented in the top seven in the practice.

The session was halted three minutes early due to an incident involving the No. 43 Ian Lacy Racing Ginetta G55 of Steve Burns who made contact with the barrier in Turn 5.

Practice 2 for the GTS class is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. EDT.
