Flying Lizard Expands into Super Trofeo With Three-Car Effort

Flying Lizard Motorsports will expand into Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America, with a multi-car effort confirmed in the IMSA-sanctioned series.

The ten-time championship-winning squad will enter three cars in the single-make series with the possibility of a fourth Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 to be confirmed at a later date.

The three confirmed cars will be driven by Brett Jacobson and Joel Miller (No. 11, Pro-Am), Slade Stewart (No. 14, LB Cup), and Tom Tait (No. 64, Am).

“I am extremely excited about this program for Flying Lizard for many reasons,” said program manager Darren Law. “Chris Ward of Automobili Lamborghini America has built such a great series.

“To be celebrating ten years of a successful one-make series speaks to his ability and the commitment of Lamborghini.

“We have been watching this series for many years and have always wanted to be part of it but just haven’t had the right opportunity.

“With the introduction of the new Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2, our partnership with Lamborghini Newport Beach, and the group of new drivers we have on board, the timing couldn’t be better.

“The opportunity to have Flying Lizard back in the IMSA paddock is also very exciting. We are really looking forward to a successful season and can’t wait to get things started.”

Flying Lizard first partnered with Lamborghini in the spring of 2019 when the Sonoma, Calif.-based team took possession of a Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo Evo and became a testing partner.

The relationship increased when the Lizard-managed K-PAX Racing switched to Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evos in Fanatec GT World Challenge America powered by AWS last year, winning the Pro class championship.

“I am absolutely thrilled to welcome Flying Lizard Motorsports to the Lamborghini Super Trofeo paddock for the 2022 season,” said Chris Ward, Senior Manager, Motorsports, Lamborghini America.

“The coming season was already looking to be extra special with us celebrating our 10th year of North American Super Trofeo competition in addition to the debut of the Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 and now we can couple that with the introduction of the Flying Lizard name to our family of Squadra Corse Customer Teams.”

The announcement brings the Lizards back to the IMSA paddock, where the team started 18 years ago, racing in the American Le Mans Series, now the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The team instantly became a fan-favorite, winning six team and driver championships in its first ten years.

After several years of racing Porsche machinery in a factory-backed effort, the team transitioned to new ownership and became a customer racing team, expanding the its footprint and car count to include various manufacturers.

The team last raced in the IMSA umbrella in 2016, racing at Daytona International Speedway and Sebring International Raceway in the GTD class.

The Lizard’s Super Trofeo program comes in addition to its previously announced efforts in Pirelli GT4 America, GT America powered by AWS and Porsche Sprint Challenge North America by Yokohama.
