Thomas Preining is set to make his IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship debut, joining Andretti Motorsports as the fourth driver in the team’s GTD effort at the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
The Austrian racer, who was crowned DTM champion last year, will share the No. 43 Porsche 911 GT3 R with Jarett Andretti, Gabby Chaves and Scott Hargrove.
The team announced a switch to Porsche machinery for its first full season in the GTD class late last year, with Andretti and Chaves forming the full season pairing while Hargrove will contest the Michelin Endurance Cup rounds.
Preining, meanwhile, is set to contest his first Rolex 24 in what will be his debut outing in the WeatherTech Championship.
The sole previous appearance racing in the U.S. for the 25-year-old, who will return to DTM to defend his title later this year, was during the FIA World Endurance Championship’s 2019 visit to Sebring International Raceway.
“I’m really excited to join the team for the Rolex 24, it’s always been a dream of mine to fight for the win in this legendary race,” said Preining.
“Doing that with such an iconic team just makes it even more special for me. Since the car is new for the team, I will do my best to help as much as I can and try to make use of my experience in a good way.
“In general all is positive and it will be a great way to start the new season on a strong note.”
