Era Motorsport will make its debut in Porsche Carrera Cup North America this weekend at Road America, having taken over three of MDK Motorsports’ entries that were withdrawn over a sponsor dispute.
The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship LMP2 outfit will expand into Porsche’s single-make series with drivers Sabre Cook, Dan Clarke and Kenton King, each driving a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car for the remainder of the season.
Cook, Clarke, and King will continue to drive the No. 37 PenFed Credit Union/ privé products, No. 64 Reis-Nichols Motorsports, and No. 74 Mint Group-sponsored cars respectively after already campaigning them in the first eight races of the season under the MDK banner.
The Ohio-based team withdrew from the series, citing a sponsorship refusal by the series to run backing from OnlyFans.
“Era has really stepped up to support us and ensure the transition goes as smoothly as possible,“ said Cook. “Era has a great track record in IMSA so I’m confident and excited about the chance to race with them.”
Clarke is similarly looking forward to continuing the season with two of his teammates still at his side.
“’I’ve known Kyle (Tilley, team owner) for a while here in Indianapolis and I’ve seen his success and profile as a top-level motorsport team grow and grow,” he said.
“It’s a thrill that Era wanted to pick up our Carrera Cup program. I can’t thank Kyle and Sarah Tilley enough for their efforts and patience this month.
“Thank you also to my sponsors for their understanding during this time.
“Road America was a great weekend for us last year scoring my first of many podiums in 2023. I’m looking forward to having Era in my corner and helping us finish out 2024 in the best possible way.”
King added: “While it’s unfortunate that MDK had to exit the Carrera Cup, I’m thrilled with the outcome. It’s fantastic that we’ve managed to keep the team together under our new banner, Era Motorsport.
“Though new to the Carrera Cup, Era Motorsport has already demonstrated their prowess as IMSA champions in the LMP2 program, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
The Carrera Cup entries come as the Indianapolis-based Era squad continues to grow its sports car racing portfolio.
“Era Motorsport as a team are all very excited this was able to work out,” said Tilley.
“While I know it’s been a headache for all involved, I’m glad we’ve been able to step in and make sure the three drivers are able to continue in their season as smoothly as possible.
“As a huge Porsche fan and collector, I’ve always kept an eye on the various forms of Porsche Motorsport, with the Carrera Cup being one of the most exciting in my eyes.
“I look forward to bringing our WeatherTech Championship experience to the Porsche paddock and we are already looking at how we can try to expand our presence in the series next year.”
