Hedge Wins Caution-Filled Race 2 at Road America

Callum Hedge claimed his breakthrough first Porsche Carrera Cup North America win in Friday’s dramatic, caution-filled Race 2 at Road America.

The pole-sitter in the No. 9 JDX Racing Porsche 911 Cup crossed the line 2.479 seconds for top honors in the 40-minute contest.

Much of the race was run under caution because of repeated multi-car pileups.

A clash between John Goetz and Josh Conley in the opening lap began a domino effect of crashes when the race restarted.

Three consecutive safety car periods disrupted running, with drivers unable to complete a fully green lap until the final ten minutes of the race.

Cole Kleck, who held the lead during the lengthy caution periods after an aggressive first lap overtake, finished second.

Hedge snatched the lead in the final safety car restart and managed to edge out a gap to Kleck behind him.

ACI Motorsports driver Janne Stiak moved up the race order and claimed third place at the flag.

Title-contender Aaron Jeansonne benefitted from the flurry of retirements at the head of the field to cycle back up the race order after dropping down to seventh on lap one.

Jeansonne, who finished second in Race 1, came home in fourth place. Crucially, he was able to secure a points finish while his title rival failed to finish.

Championship leader Tyler Maxson was forced to retire in the opening minutes of the race after he made contact with Hedge heading into the first corner.

Damage to the front left wheel saw him limp home. This meant he was unable to capitalize on the 44-point advantage that he established with a win in Race 1 earlier in the day.

Fifth place went to Jared Thomas and JTR Motorsports Engineering with Alan Metni rounding out the top six in the No. 99 Kellymoss Porsche.

An early retirement for Conley handed the Pro-Am win to Patrick Mulcahy and ACI for the second time this weekend.

In Masters, championship leader Marco Cirone claimed yet another class win. Rob Walker finished second in class ahead of Cirone’s teammate Richard Edge.

Reigning Masters champion Scott Blind spun on the final restart and dropped back to fourth in class, sacrificing valuable points in the class battle.

A third race scheduled for this weekend will make-up for the cancelled Round 6 at Miami International Autodrome earlier in the year.

Only the drivers which were due to enter this race at Miami will be permitted to drive, meaning the grid will shrink to 18 cars from the 22 cars entered in the opening two races of the weekend.

The green flag will wave on the final race of the weekend at 8:50 a.m. CST on Saturday.
