Danny Formal and Hampus Ericsson swept the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after a commanding win in a yellow-impacted Race 2 on Saturday.
As was the case on Friday, the No. 1 Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 started on pole in the hands of Hampus Ericsson, who maintained his advantage before the field fell under a lengthy full-course caution period.
The pit window opened as the field went green with just over 20 minutes remaining, with Formal continuing to keep the No. 1 Lamborghini at the head of the field, 11.067 seconds clear of the second-place finishing and Pro-Am winning No. 69 WTR machine.
Trent Hindman and Jackson Lee’s second-place finish completed a sweep of the weekend in Pro-Am and completed a team 1-2, with the former driver bringing the No. 69 Lamborghini to the checkered flag after a late battle between Pro class competitors Will Bamber and Colin Queen dropped both cars down the order after both being handed penalties for “passing outside of track limits.”
Lee battled back and forth for the Pro-Am lead early on with Tadas Karlinkas and Wyatt Foster before Hindman emerged at the point once the pit cycle played out and would take the No. 69 Lamborghini to the checkered flag to secure the class win on his birthday.
Queen’s and Bamber’s penalties promoted Scott Huffaker to a third-place finish for World Speed with Jaden Conwright, while Nick Persing and Giano Taurino put another WTR Lamborghini inside the top five with a fourth-place finish.
Al Morey and Keawn Tandon rounded out the top five in the No. 77 Forty7 Motorsports entry.
Mateo Siderman took home the Am class win for TR3 for the second day in a row, despite starting third in class, with Nick Groat also completing a weekend sweep in the LB Cup class, having been unchallenged in the 50-minute contest.
All four Super Trofeo North America classes saw sweeps in Indianapolis this weekend.
The race’s only full-course caution was triggered by a solo spin for Conrad Geis, who looped his No. 67 TR3 Lamborghini around out of the final corner. Sean McAuliffe then made contact hard with the rear of Dean Neuls’ No. 70 TR3 Lamborghini as both drivers attempted to avoid the spinning Geis.
Both cars sustained significant, race-ending damage, with McAuliffe’s No. 46 Precisino Performance Motorsports Lamborghini coming to a stop at Turn 1, and Neuls’ Lamborghini becoming engulfed in flames as a result of the damage. The Am driver was able to stop his TR3 machine near pit out and eventually emerge from the burning car under his own power.
Geis was handed a 60-second stop-and-hold penalty for incident responsibility.
The No. 10 WTR entry of Glenn McGee stopped on track at Turn 4 and was later handed a 30-second stop-and-hold penalty for incident responsibility with Clay Wilson’s No. 37 TR3 machine, which spun at Turn 7 and ultimately came to a stop behind the Turn 10 barrier overlap with apparent left-rear suspension damage.
The No. 47 Precision Performance Motorsports Lamborghini of Dominic Starkweather was looped around by Nicky Hays’ ANSA Motorsports entry, who was handed a 30-second stop-and-hold penalty as a result before a separate ten-second post-race time penalty for contact with Seth Henry.
