GMG Racing has acquired a Porsche 911 GT3-R for its 2016 racing efforts, as the fourth North American team to commit to Porsche’s new 991-spec GT3 contender.
Like EFFORT Racing, GMG will focus primarily on a Pirelli World Challenge program in both the GT and GTA classes, with the potential of other series to be added.
Alex Job Racing and Black Swan Racing have also acquired the new Porsche, to compete in IMSA’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
GMG has also run in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America championship this season with the new Lamborghini Huracán LP 620-2. It plans to continue there next year.
“Porsche has been a huge part of our brand over the last 15 years, and it is exciting to commit to a full return,” said GMG team owner James Sofronas.
“Our efforts in the GT-Cup class during this year’s Pirelli World Challenge showed that we’re still very capable with Porsche machinery, and getting our hands on the new GT3 R should present a lot of mutual benefits between us and Porsche Motorsport.
“With Porsche Motorsport literally across the street from our shop, we’re excited to re-unite at the top levels. The new GT3 R should be instantly competitive in the Pirelli World Challenge, and we’re working hard on some additional opportunities as well.”
GMG, which has fielded several Audi R8 LMS ultras in World Challenge the last several years, still maintains several of those chassis.
Brad Kettler, Audi Sport customer racing director of operations and engineering, said those cars may be available to run in GTA on a customer basis next season.
