Hyundai has taken the wraps off the Veloster N ETCR, its first ever electric race car and the second car built to ETCR regulations.

The car, which will debut when the ETCR platform officially launches in 2020, was revealed on Tuesday, the first media day at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show.

It is based on the road-going Veloster N model and follows the South Korean brand’s i30 N TCR and Veloster N TCR packages which compete in TCR series around the world.

The Veloster N ETCR was designed and built at Hyundai Motorsport’s headquarters in Alzenau, near Frankfurt, and featured a mid-mounted motor and rear-wheel-drive setup.

E-racing365 initially revealed Hyundai’s commitment to ETCR in November last year, while the brand teased its new car last week in a video featuring reigning FIA WTCR champion Gabriele Tarquini.

Design work on the car began in November 2018 ahead of a the first shakedown in August 2019. A full testing program will begin later this month.

Hyundai becomes the second manufacturer to commit to ETCR after SEAT subsidiary Cupra, which revealed its e-Racer alongside the announcement of the platform in March 2018.

It’s unclear how many other manufacturers could be present for the series’ debut next year, which could include up to four events before a full-scale rollout in 2021.

“Today, we have experienced another special milestone in the history of Hyundai Motorsport,” commented Thomas Schemera, head of product division, executive vice president of Hyundai Motor Group.

“We have been anticipating this moment for some time and we are thrilled to open this exciting new chapter for our company.

“Through our successful Customer Racing division, we have spent many years honing our skills in touring car racing, which has resulted in two packages capable of competing for championships around the world.

“ETCR is the natural next step in our journey, and one that aligns perfectly to Hyundai’s global strategy for electric vehicle production.

“We have a detailed test program for the Veloster N ETCR, supported by the fully trained and experienced team of engineers at Hyundai Motorsport; we can’t wait to see the car in action for the first time.

“The Veloster N ETCR will make an ideal addition to our ongoing commitment to WRC and to Customer Racing through the i20 R5, i30 N TCR and Veloster N TCR.”
